Limestone Fireplace Description

We have what I would call a "rough hewn" limeStone (http://g603.net) fireplace, with floor to ceiling multi-sized blocks of an extremely uneven texture extending about 10 feet in width in the middle of our family room.  There is some discoloration (darkening) at the top of the fireplace proper, which doesn't worry me to any great degree -- it simply looks "used."  However, the base of the wall (about 2 inches high) is quite dark and (http://maplered.com) discolored from repeated cleaning of the slate hearth.

Is there any safe way to remove this discoloration?  Power-washing is not an option, as the hearth only extends out about 2 feet before hitting carpet.  I'm concerned about the proper method of cleaning both the Stone (http://g603.net) and (http://maplered.com) the sand (http://maplered.com) ed grout.

Thank you,

Michelle Stochl.
